Changing Southern Sudan, one farmer at a time.

In the field of relief and development, the strongest evidence of work well done is when a community is strong enough to stand on its own. Local structures become the strongest structures. Local practitioners become the experts.

Wilson Akot Mawien is on his way to becoming a local expert in farming.

He and his wife Ahok Aliel have three children and a small farm in the community of Omdurman in Southern Sudan. Wilson and his wife received seeds, tools, an ox-plough and training in best practices. Today, they grow a hardier-than-ever version of sorghum, groundnuts, sesame and cow peas. Wilson and Ahok Aliel have learned how to grow and nurture their crops in a semi-arid region.

This couple and their children are on their way to self-sufficiency and food security. It was especially moving to hear that Wilson has also been using his ox to plow the field of a blind neighbour. He is blessing others as you have blessed him.

Recently, Wilson was chosen to be a “Contact Farmer”. He will be a “farmer-trainer” in charge of demonstrating to other farmers how to plant and harvest in order to create the highest possible yields. Wilson will invite others to learn what he has learned about ploughing, planting and harvesting. As the knowledge that Wilson has gained from his involvement in this World Relief Canada project is passed on to other farmers, the whole community will grow stronger.

Wilson's story is a small piece of what we doing on a large scale in the Aweil East Highlands of Southern Sudan where his community is located.

World Relief Canada, in partnership with Tearfund and the Canadian International Development Agency, is working to strengthen local governments and structures so that communities themselves are strengthened and empowered to fight the death, disease and devastation that has defined them for so many years. With your financial support, entire communities can grow stronger and begin to provide safe water supplies, sanitation, health services and food security — fundamental building blocks that the community requires.

But true sustainability requires more, so with the over-arching goal of self-sufficiency in mind, World Relief Canada is focusing on the creation of four locally-run primary health units. These clinics, as well as other learning outposts, will become centres for local health education where families can learn about nutrition, sanitation and other basic skills so they can protect themselves against some of the most common health threats in their communities.

Some of the most common health threats come from a lack of clean water and food scarcity. We help ensure the long-term capacity of the communities to become safe, healthy centres of life by providing latrines and improving access to safe water. Food security is also built as seeds, tools and ox-ploughs are distributed and farmers are trained in their use.

And, more importantly of course, trained in how to train others. Just like Wilson.

Every day in the field, we meet men and women like Wilson and Ahok Aliel — parents who desire a better life for themselves and their children. They make up the communities where World Relief Canada is privileged to work and partner — communities working hard to be able to stand on their own.

These communities, these families need only the opportunity. That is where we come in.

Will you join us by giving a gift today?

    God bless you for caring,
