Project Title: Thanh Hai Water
Project Designation: 1306
The Need:
Safe water is deficient throughout Vietnam. Given the lack of sewers and poor sanitation conditions, surface water is rarely safe for drinking. Hieu Thuong hamlet (of the Thanh Hai commune, Ha Nam Province) is no exception. Its surface water is often contaminated with animal waste, agricultural fertilizers and insecticides. Most families and schools in Hieu Thuong do not have safe drinking water. The poor quality of water has posed a continual health threat. Parasitic infections to children and women are common to poor households. Rain water is used exclusively for eating and drinking and is very scarce during dry seasons. CAMA's survey on April 2008 indicated that 56% of households in Hieu Thuong Hamlet use mainly river water from the nearby Day River.
WRC’s Response:
Due to the frequent salinity and high arsenic or iron content in shallow wells on the plains of North Vietnam, CAMA will continue to use a tried and tested technology, the Water Tower System (WTS) design.
Water Tower Systems are designed to draw water from a nearby river. At the river inlet, a tank with a debris-filter will be constructed where water can be stored. Water is pumped from this tank into a settling-tank where iron and small particles can settle. Water will pass through an oxidation tank to force any remaining iron from the water. The water is then filtered through course, and then fine sand, as well as through a natural forming algae layer. Chlorine will be added at this stage to kill harmful microbes and bacteria. The safe water is stored in a reservoir. Water from this reservoir will be pumped up to a tank mounted on a tower. Water from this tank will be distributed to the people in the hamlet, and CAMA will ensure regular testing to verify the water's safety.
Contributions from the Thanh Hai commune and beneficiaries (labour and inputs) will amount to 20%- 30% of the total cost of the project.
1. Provide water sanitation education to all heads of households of beneficiary families (260).
2. Provide safe water for pre-schools, and nurseries within the hamlet.
3. Provide safe water to 260 households.
4. Provide women's hygiene education to a minimum of 200 women.
Progress at last reporting date: July 2009
1. Water sanitation education was provided to 80 heads of households (HH's) as well as to 230 beneficiaries (women, pre-schools, & nursery schools).
2. Safe water provided for 1 pre-school within the hamlet (40 children).
3. Construction is underway to provide safe water to 255 households; expected to be completed end of October.
4. Women's hygiene education provided to 500 women.
WRC hopes, with your help, to make a difference in the general health, social and economic conditions of rural residents living in Hieu Thuong Hamlet.
