Project Title: Kindo Koysho/Offa Food Security
Project Designation: 1510
The Need:
The region shares borders with Kenya in the south, the Sudan Republic in the southwest, Gambela region in the northwest and Oromia region in the north and east. The lowlands are characterized by arid and semi-arid climatic conditions and are mainly inhabited by pastoralists, while the highlands receive sufficient rainfall and are inhabited by sedentary farmers.
Environmental degradation is a common phenomenon. Soil fertility has depleted as a result of excessive soil erosion, due mainly to flooding and poor agricultural practices. The vegetation cover has been cleared to meet the different needs of the growing population. Mountains are devoid of vegetation cover and steep slopes are being cultivated, aggravating soil erosion.
WRC’s Response:
This project seeks to economically, socially, emotionally and spiritually empower and transform a community of 33,248 people in 10 Kebele Administrations (KA) in Kindo Koysha and Offa Districts.
1. Degraded land is to be conserved and managed in a sustainable way by community institutions in the target KA’s in Kindo Koysha and Offa Districts.
2. Improved and adaptable horticultural and root crop varieties are to be introduced and adapted by farmers using irrigation in two KAs of Offa District.
3. Income generating activities are to be promoted and adopted by targeted households in Kindo Koysha and Offa Districts.
4. Increased access to potable water is to be provided for 1,041 households by developing four springs in Kindo Koysha and six springs in the kebeles of Offa Districts.
5. Increased awareness is to be raised in the target population on hygiene and sanitation, family planning and malaria control.
6. Community Institutions are to be built and supported in the target KAs in Kindo Koysha and Offa districts.
RECENT SUCCESSES:
1. 1.5 hectares of land was treated with conservation structures (stone bands and check dams); 20 water shed management committees have been established.
2. 20% of irrigation farmers have been introduced to new cropping technologies.
3. 1200 self-help groups have gained business and enterprise development skills.
4. Increased access to potable water has not yet been achieved.
5. Increased awareness on hygiene and sanitation, family planning and malaria control has not yet been started.
6. 126 Self-Help groups were formed and started savings & credit services to their members; and 7 water user groups were formed (20-26 members each).
You can help improve and build a sustainable food security for 33,248 people in 10 Kebele Administrations (KAs) in Kindo Koysha and Offa Districts.
