Project Title:  Hope for Cambodia's Children

    Project Designation:  1301

    The Need:

With over 50% of the population under the age of 20, Cambodia has a high dependency ratio.  Child mortality rates continue to be alarmingly high; one Cambodian child in eight dies before reaching the age of 5, compared with one child's death in 85 in most developed countries.

Because of widespread poverty and cultural demands, children are the most vulnerable sector of the population in Cambodia.  They suffer from lack of education because many stay at home to provide care for younger siblings while their parents work.  This lack of education and of appropriate parenting results in poor hygiene and little knowledge regarding preventative health methods for the children.

World Relief Canada has supported the Hope for Cambodia's Children program for several years.  Creative teaching methods (which are new to Cambodia) such as puppetry, drama, child-oriented health teaching, exciting games and small rewards for achievement are being used with the children in the slums.  These teaching methods are also being taught to teenagers (leaders in training) and to church leaders.  Local church leaders, with the help of teenagers, are then replicating the lessons (with low-cost, appropriate materials) in their churches.  These volunteers will eventually lead the village meetings, and are being provided with extensive training to enable them to eventually manage the program on their own.  Currently 170 "Hope For Cambodia's Children" groups are run by local cell churches.

The 'Way of Hope' staff focuses on the discipleship of youth and adults who observe the children's meetings.  In areas where there is no national church, cell groups are being set up in homes.

    WORLD RELIEF CANADA'S RESPONSE:

      As of September 2009

    1.  37,991+ children age 5 to 12 (the target age, but higher numbers if including on-lookers) will participate in this project by June 2009.  These children will all hear about preventative health education, the gospel, be aware of AIDS, warned of the dangers of the sex industry, and encouraged to go to school.

    2.  87%% of the children will be able to recognize and treat diarrhea, dengue fever, and will be able to treat small cuts and wounds.

    3.  319 of the local children's groups will be led by church volunteers.

    4.  6,632 teens will join the Mobilizing for Life meetings.

    5.  832 cell churches will be operating with 45% of cell church members active in holistic Christian ministry.
