Our Partners
Canadian Foodgrains Bank
Introduction
15 churches and church based agencies, representing 32 denominations, all work together to end hunger through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB). There are a lot of differences in these churches, yet they agree on one fundamental thing… people should not go hungry. They set aside their differences, come together around a common table, draw in the wisdom and efforts of international partners, and develop programs that have helped millions of people in the world move from hunger to fullness. Be sure to view the video “Feed the World your Hope” to get a better understanding of the work of CFGB.
How does it work? Canadian Foodgrains operates as a central agency, mobilizing funds and grain for its member churches and agencies. There are 16 accounts at the Foodgrains Bank (one for each member plus a general account) towards which donors can designate their funds. Each member works with their international partners to develop suitable programs to respond to hunger in a particular country. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provides additional funds for many projects at a matching rate of 4:1. These programs may take the form of food aid, food security, nutrition or food justice depending on the needs of the community. Nearly 20,000 churches across Canada are connected to this important work! That’s an incredible Christian (and Canadian) witness!

CFGB's People to People tour in the late summer of 2009 featured Mary Beth Sanate (middle in photo) of Rural Women’s Upliftment Society, Manipur, India (partner of World Relief Canada). She came to the Ontario Region for the end of August and beginning of September 2009. RWUS works to improve livelihoods for rural women, promote gender equality and human rights in the Manipur/Churachandpur area or Northeast India. Growing Projects
A Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) Growing Project happens when someone provides a field and then a group of farmers takes on the task of jointly producing a crop on that field. The group will approach different farm supply outlets, grain elevators, agricultural chemical and fertilizer companies to obtain free services. The farmers choose a field or part of a field to be used, the type of crop and who will provide the labour and the equipment to perform each required operation. As fall approaches the group will choose a day to harvest the crop. The crop is then delivered and the proceeds are directed to WRCanada through the CFGB. This method usually involves actual farmers who can contribute labour, expertise, crop production costs and or equipment. For more information visit www.foodgrainsbank.ca/growing_projects.aspx
Kernels of Hope
The Kernels of Hope is a concept which allows urban people to become involved in raising crops to provide food and resources for those in need. It begins with locating a Canadian farmer who is willing to rent a field or part of a field. The annual rent is negotiated and a suitable crop is determined based on easy marketability and storage. Production costs such as seeds, seed treatment, fertilizer, weed control, crop insurance, fungicides, cost of the farmer to harvest the crop and cost of getting the crop delivered to the marketplace would then need to be determined. Visit www.kernelsofhope.blogspot.com for more information.
Virtual Farmers
People are invited to become Virtual Farmers by paying the approximate costs of producing crops ranging from part of an acre up to multiple acres. The farmer involved is simply renting his land and getting paid for doing the work. Virtual farmers can be individuals or they could be Women’s groups, Summer Camp projects, Sunday School classes, friends etc. For more information on how to become a virtual farmer go to www.kernelsofhope.blogspot.com
